Google Groups - Sending email as a Google Group

Introduction

Members of a Google Group may want to send outgoing email from the group itself so that replies are returned to the entire group and their personal email addresses are not displayed in the conversation. This article describes how to enable this setting and utilize this feature.

Sending Email as a Group

  1. Go to groups.google.com and select the specified group in the list.
  2. Click the "New conversation" button:

  3. This will open a new email draft. In the "from" setting, select the drop-down arrow and select the group name: Screenshot of the Google Groups draft email, highlighting the "from" field where you can select the group's address.
  4. If there is no drop-down arrow next to your email address, you may not have the appropriate permissions to "post as group."
    1. Contact the group's owner, who can use the "Enabling the 'Post-as-Group' Setting" instructions below to update your permissions.
    2. If the owner is not able to update the settings or you already have the appropriate permissions, submit a Google Group request.

Enabling the "Post as Group" Setting

Owners of a Google Group can update the settings to change who is allowed to "post as group." Depending on the group, managers or members may be allowed to update these setting as well.

  1. Go to groups.google.com and locate the specified group in the list.
  2. Select the cog wheel icon next to the group name. If this icon does not appear, you do not have permissions to edit the group settings and will need to contact a group owner.
    • If you are the group owner and are unable to edit the settings, please submit a Google Group request for assistance.
  3. In the Google Group settings page, scroll down to the "Who can post as group" option. By default, only owners can post to the groupScreenshot of the Google Group settings page option for "Who can post as group", showing that only group owners can post
  4. If you want everyone in the group to be able to send email as the group, move the slider over to "group members." If you want some people to be able to send as the group but not everyone, move the slider to "group managers" and make sure the appropriate people are set as managers.
  5. Press "save changes" at the bottom of the page; it may take a few minutes for the settings to be reflected for all members.
