Duo MFA - Enrolling a Phone Number in Duo

Introduction

This article provides instructions for enrolling a landline or basic cell phone (non-smartphone) in Duo Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). This method allows you to verify your identity via a voice call or an SMS text message.

Enrolling a Phone Number in Duo

  1. On the Select an option page of the Duo portal, select Phone number. The phone entry page will open.

  1. Enter Phone Details:
    • Verify the Country Code is correct.
    • Enter your 10-digit phone number (e.g., 520-555-0100).
    • For Landlines: You must check the box "This is a landline phone".
    • For Basic Cell Phones (SMS): Ensure the landline checkbox is unchecked.
  2. Select Add phone number.

  3. Handle Extensions (Landline Only):
    • If your landline has an extension, enter it and select Add extension.
    • If there is no extension, select Skip this step.

  1. Verification: Double-check the number displayed on the screen. If correct, select Yes, it’s correct.

  1. Completion: The 'Added phone' or 'Added phone call' confirmation page will appear. Depending on the device type, you are now ready to receive SMS codes or automated voice calls for MFA.
