Overview
If your Banner sessions time out frequently or earlier than you think they should, try one or more of the following quick fix suggestions. If none of these solve your problem, then submit a Banner support request.
Solutions
Use the VPN
If you want to connect to the Banner administrative website from an off-campus location, you must ensure you are connected to the College network using the VPN. Please refer to our VPN Service Request to ensure VPN is properly configured on your workstation and that you are connected to the VPN when attempting to login to Banner.
Browser-Related Issues:
Use a Single Browser Tab for Banner
When you have multiple browser tabs open for Banner pages, the session timeout is generally managed by the first tab opened, which can result in unpredictable session timeouts in the other tabs. If you need to have multiple Banner pages open simultaneously, open them in different browsers. Then the session will behave as expected within each browser.
Restart Internet Browser
Completely close your Internet browser by clicking the 'X' button in the upper-right corner of the window. Once closed, make sure no other instance of your browser is running. This should clear some temporary browser files that build up while you are working with the application.
Clear Browser Cache
When web browsers are open for long periods of time, they can collect stale information, or cache. The intent of cache is to speed up future visits to websites. However, cache can interfere after application updates. Follow the steps in this Knowledge Base article to clear your browser’s cache, but be aware that doing so may require you to sign in again on websites that require a login.
Use Incognito or InPrivate or Private Browsing
All modern Internet browsers have functionality for private browsing, which allows you to have a fresh Internet session without previously used cookies or temporary Internet files.
Use Incognito in Google Chrome
- Open Chrome.
- In the upper-right corner, click the menu icon (three vertical dots).
- Click New Incognito Window.
Use Private Browsing in Mozilla Firefox
- Open Firefox.
- In the upper-right corner, click the menu icon (three horizontal lines).
- Click New Private Window.
Use In-Private in Microsoft Internet Explorer
- Open Internet Explorer.
- In the upper-right corner, click the gear icon.
- Click Safety.
- Click InPrivate Browsing.
Use InPrivate in Microsoft Edge
- Open Edge.
- In the upper-right corner, click the three horizontal dots ( ⋯ ), and then click New InPrivate window.
Switch Internet Browsers
If restarting your browser does not work, try switching browsers. Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox are the two recommended browsers for Banner. If you are currently using Firefox, try using Chrome, or vice versa.
