Low Disk Space Error - Windows 11

Summary

This article provides steps to resolve the error in Windows 11 and outlines additional steps to take if the issue recurs.

Body

Introduction

The "Low Disk Space" error occurs when your computer's main storage drive (usually the C: drive) is nearly full. Clearing out temporary files and deleting or moving large, unnecessary files can typically fix this error. This article provides steps to resolve the error in Windows 11 and outlines additional steps to take if the issue recurs.

Instructions

Use Cleanup Recommendations

This tool helps you quickly find and remove temporary, large, or unused files.

  1. Open the Start Menu and search for Settings to open the Settings app.
  2. In the left-side menu, select System, then in the System menu, select Storage.
  3. Wait for your drive to finish scanning. Once complete, select Cleanup Recommendations under the Storage Management section.
  4. Review the files in the following sections, check the box next to the items you want to remove, and then click the Clean up # bytes button.
    • Temporary Files: Select files that are safe to delete, such as old Windows Update files, delivery optimization files, and items in the Recycle Bin.
    • Large or Unused Files: Review and select any files (such as old videos or image files) that you no longer need.

Back Up or Move Large Personal Files

If the Cleanup Recommendations tool doesn't free up enough space, you may need to move large personal files (such as those in your DocumentsDownloads, or Pictures folders) to cloud storage.

  • Use Google Drive: For Pima Community College employees and students, Google Drive is the recommended storage solution for personal and academic files. You can move large files from your computer to Google Drive to safely store them and free up space on your computer's hard drive.
