Duo Prompt Shows No Options or Only a Bypass Code

Summary

This article explains how to resolve an issue where your Duo login shows no authentication options or only a Bypass Code. This happens when Duo is set up using a device-specific method.

Details

While logging in to an application, the Duo Prompt does not display all possible authentication methods or only displays a Bypass Code option. This issue often occurs when you set up Duo using WebAuthn or device-based biometric methods (such as fingerprint or facial recognition on an Android/iPhone) during initial setup.

Solution

These methods work only on the device they were initially configured with and do not support logins from other devices or browsers.

  • If You Still Have Access to Your Old Device:
    • On the original device you used to set up Duo, go to the Duo device management portal at this link: https://pima.login.duosecurity.com/devices and log in as you normally would (for example, with your PIN, fingerprint, or Windows Hello).
    • On the management page, select the Add a device option.
    • Choose Duo Mobile (recommended) and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the setup.
    • For more details, you can reference the Duo Enrollment Quick Start Guide.
  • If You No Longer Have Access to Your Old Device:
    • If your original device is lost, stolen, or no longer working, we will need to verify your identity to add a new device.
    • Please submit a Duo: Report an Issue request, and we will schedule a time to verify your ID.
